Red-Shouldered Hawk Sighting

Local Charlestonian Chad Norman recently brought his kids out to Daniel Island to do some nature photography and while on the island he spotted this Red-Shouldered Hawk sitting tamely on a tree branch. According to Chad, the bird looked as big as a red-tailed hawk on-site (around 50 cm), but once he saw the photos he thought otherwise. The creature’s long yellow legs were the real giveaway, as well as the rusty breast.

Island residents no longer have to venture off-island to search for the latest fashions. Trendy and sophisticated clothing, shoes and accessories are now being brought to us by two chic new boutiques on Seven Farms Drive in downtown Daniel Island. Looking for something fun to wear as springtime approaches? Look no further than Monkee’s and Thera M.
At Thera M, a careful selection of comfortable and wearable clothing is inspired by owner Megan Berrard’s shopping trips to New York’s SoHo district and Robertson Boulevard in Los Angeles. The shop offers laid-back coastal style, with an infusion of cutting-edge looks from designers relatively unknown in the Lowcountry.

Just a couple of doors down, Monkee’s of Daniel Island invites shoppers to experience boutique shopping as it is meant to be – fun and personal! The shop carries the finest lines in shoes, clothing and accessories from the world’s hottest designers.
You can visit Thera M and Monkee’s online, but better yet, stop by the next time you’re in town and check out these wonderful new Daniel Island shopping destinations.

THE PRACTICE RANGE: Righty or Lefty?

Are you a right hand or left hand putter? What I mean is which hand do you use to control your putting stroke? The best way to discover which category you fall into is to place five balls approximately five feet from the hole. Grip your putter with just your right hand and then putt the five balls. Do the same thing with your left hand. You will soon discover which hand is best for you. This is important because there are different fundamentals for different hands.
If you are a person that feels control with the right hand you might need a putter that is a little longer than your present one. You will stand taller with a longer putter, which will cause your elbows to point slightly out. This in turn will create a crook in your right wrist with the palm facing the target. When you stroke the putt be sure the crook remains throughout the stroke and the palm swings lower than your target.
When you control the putter with the left hand your fundamentals are different. You want your arms to hang almost straight and this is why a shorter putter might be better. When stroking the putt pull the putter through the stroke with the back of the left hand toward the target. If you use the wrong fundamentals for these methods you are in trouble as far as being consistent in your putting. If your putting is good, stick to what you are doing. If you are having trouble, try these suggestions – what do you have to loose!

Island Residents Get “Scrambled”

For more than ten years, Daniel Island residents have been gathering in one another’s homes for dinner, drinks and great conversation at the annual Scrambled Supper. When the event began, there were so few homes on the island that guests could walk from house to house! Since those first years, Daniel Island has evolved and more people than ever are calling the island “home”. Now the Scrambled Supper includes houses all over the island – from Daniel Island Park on the north side to Smythe Park on the south side.
Each year, there are more and more faces in the crowds as new residents join the party in order to meet their neighbors and other island residents, as well as get an inside glimpse into a few of Daniel Island’s beautiful homes! This year’s event on February 21 was the second largest ever and included more than 180 participants and 14 host homes.

Guests sign up to either be a host home or bring an appetizer, salad, entrée or dessert. They are then divided into smaller groups and move from home to home in between courses, spending 45 minutes on appetizers and then salads, and a full hour at the home featuring the entrée. Guests then make their way to Providence Baptist Church to end the evening with coffee and dessert.
